Why NSVH for Your New Pet?

Starting out with the right partner sets your puppy or kitten up for a lifetime of healthy, low-stress care.

Personalized Vaccine Schedules

We build a vaccination and wellness plan customized to your pet’s lifestyle — not a one-size-fits-all protocol. Indoor cat vs. outdoor cat. City dog vs. trail dog. It matters.

Fear Free From Day One

How a puppy or kitten experiences their first vet visit shapes their relationship with veterinary care for life. Our Fear Free certified team invests in making that first visit a positive one.

Resources Beyond the Appointment

We’ve built comprehensive guides for new puppy and kitten owners, so the visit is never your only resource. You leave with a plan — and the answers you need between visits.

What to Expect at Your Pet’s First Visit

Your first appointment is all about getting to know your new puppy or kitten and building the foundation for a healthy life. We’ll cover a complete physical exam, your pet’s vaccination schedule, nutrition counseling, parasite prevention, microchipping, and early behavior guidance — and because every visit is a full 30 minutes, there’s real time to ask every question a new owner has.

Puppies typically begin their vaccine series around 6–8 weeks and continue every 3–4 weeks through about 16 weeks of age. Kittens follow a similar series, usually from 8 to 16 weeks. We’ll map out exactly which visits your pet needs and when, so nothing slips through the cracks.

We wrote these so you can come prepared: read our New Puppy Guide and New Kitten Guide before your first visit.

New Patient FAQ

When should I bring my new puppy or kitten in for their first visit?

As soon as you can — ideally within the first few days of bringing them home, and before their vaccine series lapses. If your pet is due for shots in their first 16 weeks, getting on the schedule early keeps them protected on time.

What vaccines does a puppy need in their first year?

Puppies receive a core series of DHPP (distemper, hepatitis, parvovirus, parainfluenza) every 3–4 weeks until about 16 weeks of age, plus a rabies vaccine. Depending on lifestyle, we may also recommend leptospirosis, Bordetella, canine influenza, or Lyme. We’ll tailor the exact plan to your puppy.

What vaccines does a kitten need?

Kittens receive a core FVRCP series (feline viral rhinotracheitis, calicivirus, panleukopenia) from roughly 8 to 16 weeks, plus a rabies vaccine. For kittens with outdoor access, we usually recommend the feline leukemia (FeLV) vaccine as well.

Do I need to bring anything to my pet’s first appointment?

Bring any paperwork from the breeder, shelter, or rescue — including vaccination or deworming records — plus a fresh stool sample if you have one. And bring your questions! The 30-minute visit is built for them.

Do you microchip puppies and kittens?

Yes. Microchipping is quick, and we can do it during a routine visit or at the same time as a spay/neuter. We’ll also make sure the chip is registered so you’re reunited quickly if your pet is ever lost.

Can you see a rescue pet whose vaccination history is unknown?

Absolutely — it’s one of the most common first visits we see. If records are missing, we’ll start fresh with a thorough exam and build a safe vaccine and parasite-prevention plan from there.

How soon after adopting should I schedule an appointment?

We recommend scheduling within the first week. An early visit lets us confirm your new pet is healthy, answer your questions, and keep their vaccine series on track — and many adoption contracts require a vet visit within a set number of days.

AKA Linda Vittorio! My first experience with NSVH was last Thursday when my senior cat, Charlotte, underwent needed tooth extractions and a tongue biopsy.I found the staff to be very knowledgeable, professional and caring.Charlotte seems to be coming along nicely!I appreciate the accessibility of the staff and the phone call the post surgical day.Of course, my paws are crossed that Charlotte’s biopsy will be benign. I know she was in good hands with Dr Stone.

Dr. Heather is an incredible veterinarian that is both professional and passionate. She cares for all animals as if they are her own, she is kind and respectful to pet owners, and she is extremely insightful. She offers the best possible options for various ailments, while still taking into consideration (and showing great respect for) the financial and physical situations that the owner may be working with.I highly recommend this practice to anyone looking for a thoughtful, caring, and knowledgeable vet.

I took my cat here for her annual rabies vaccine during the quarantine/pandemic. My cat was perfectly happy upon returning to my car (despite my not being able to enter the vet office). I trust that they took great care of my cat and were very gentle with her. I would highly recommend them! They were also able to answer any and all of my questions and did so patiently.

I have a new 12 week old rescue puppy who was itching up a storm. The team at NSVH was very responsive and “made the time” to fit us into their busy schedule. I am beyond pleased that my puppy will be taken care of by what I consider to be the VERY BEST Veterinary practice in the Main Line! Many thanks to Heather and the entire team!

The doctors and staff are knowledgeable and show that they truly care about the wellness of your animals. I’ve been in a lot with one of my three dogs for skin issues and they’ve been beyond helpful in getting him on the road to recovery! And they also are great with accommodations if your pup doesn’t like other dogs. I can’t recommend them enough!

Since having pets I’ve used 3 different vets in the area and Newtown Square is by far the best. As long as I have pets I will always bring them here. Everyone there really cares about the animals and the medical care is top notch.

I took my dog Lucy to Newtown Square Veterinary Hospital today and was extremely pleased! The office was beautiful and I especially loved seeing the fenced in potty area next to the building! The staff was very friendly and paid a lot of attention to my dog as soon as we walked in the door. I found Dr. DiGiacomo to be professional, but also very caring. During Lucy’s examination she was very through and was sitting with Lucy on the floor to keep her comfortable. When I left I felt that Lucy was seen by a very experienced Veternarian and was given the medication that will help her through her illness. I will be back with my other dogs and feel very lucky to have found a vet so close to my home.

Kind, compassionate, wonderful doctor and staff. Unfortunately, my visit with my bunny was a sad one, but they made a difficult time much easier. I’ve been to many vets over the years with different kinds of animals, but they are the best. They were extremely accommodating when I called for an emergency appointment, and were very kind and patient with us when we had to say our final goodbyes. I highly recommend them to anyone. ?
